As teased at ComicsPro last week, and now more fully revealed, Valiant are launching an initiative called ‘Icons’ that will focus in on many of their legacy characters currently celebrating their 25th anniversary in 2017.
In 2016, Valiant released several mini-series pushing the boundaries of known territory further and introducing new characters in the Valiant universe, including titles like Savage, Britannia, Divinity II and Generation Zero, but Valiant have stated that their publishing focus in 2017 is going to take us back to the “icons” of Valiant Comics in this anniversary year.
Starting with the arrival of X-O Manowar #1, written by Matt Kindt and drawn by Tomas Giorello, on March 22nd, the Icons initiative will kick in and we can expect other characters to receive large-scale, epic treatment in 2017.
Valiant say that like with X-O Manowar #1, we can expect a ” similarly huge scale and ambition for Valiant’s most iconic characters that will follow throughout the year” as they build toward “the previously announced Harbinger Wars 2 event in 2018″.
The new X-O Manowar launch, for those who may not know, really hones in on the character, tracking Aric of Dacia’s attempt to live a simple life on an alien world, but due to oppression of the local people he becomes, first a conscripted soldier, then a general, and an Emperor before finding his identity as a Visigoth again in a war-torn situation not of his own making. This new ongoing series also received an epic ad campaign to spread the word about the launch. If we can expect similar treatment for the other “icons” of the Valiant Universe, we’ll see some very in depth examinations of character identity through situations that test their metal and objectives in life.
The characters who will be part of the Icons initiative are: Faith, Bloodshot, Shadowman, and Harbinger’s Toyo Harada, who will feature in Harbinger Wars 2.
