Boom! Studios have announced that they are going to bring the characters from Clueless to comic book form, as based on the film, which was in turn inspired by Jane Austen’s novel, Emma. This makes an interesting kind of sense since Archaia, an imprint of Boom, are also going to be publishing an OGN based on Jane Eyre, Jane, further filling out a trend in modern-set adaptations.
This August, two writers will pen the series, including filmmaker, and author Amber Benson (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Witches of Echo Park, Death’s Daughter) and author Sarah Kuhn (Heroine Complex, Barbie), and they’ll be joined by artist Siobhan Keenan (Adventure Time).
Our characters from Clueless face a youthful existential crisis as they approach their senior year of high school in this new series, according to Boom.
In an interesting twist of fate, author Amber Benson actually tried out for a part in the film at the age of 17, but wasn’t selected, but she recalls reading the script, then titled As If and thinking it had a great deal of potential. She’s very excited to be working on the project now, she says, and working with co-writer Kuhn and editor Shannon Waters.
Kuhn says she’s very much in tune with these characters, and particularly “loves that Cher Horowitz is a heroine who takes on every obstacle she faces with a unique combination of ingenuity, positivity, and the ability to pull off yellow tartan like nobody else”. She adds that working on the book is a “total dream come true and an incredible challenge and I hope we’re doing Cher, Dionne, and Tai justice—we’re certainly having a ton of fun.”
