Retconned Heroes Struggle With Normal Lives In Black Hammer Volume 1: Secret Origins, Out Next Week

by Staff

Next Wednesday, March 23, the first collected volume of Black Hammer, written by Jeff Lemire and drawn by Dean Ormston with colors by Dave Stewart, arrives in comic shops. The book has also been the focus of an annual with a lot of interest from other comic creators as they expand on a shared universe of heroes whose history is not as straightforward as that of many comic creations. The heroes in Black Hammer have been trapped in a strange loop-like existence following their own retcon from Spiral City and the world they were trying to save. But maybe it’s a gift to have a normal life, if they could see it that way.

These memorable characters, including Abraham Slam, Golden Gail, Colonel Weird, Madame Dragonfly, and Barbalien while their time away on a farm, but dream of escape and return to their former selves. If they work together, they might just manage it, but should they? Their own troubled relationships with their hero roles and the complex ways their differences isolate them from each other are also a big part of Black Hammer.

This edition includes the bonus material of an afterword by Jeff Lemire, some original concept art he created for the series, and a substantial amount of process art and design from Dean Ormston. This first volume, titled “Secret Origins” collects issues #1-6.

Black Hammer Volume 1: Secret Origins will arrive in shops on Wednesday, March 29th, 2017.
