It was news to me, even though I’ve followed Reilly Brown’s stellar work in comics for some years, that he has produced hundreds of pages of free online comics for Ghostek that unleash his inner zaniness on a new level. And yes, that’s saying something since he’s primarily known for his long run on Deadpool.
His digital comic Dash Hudson was conceived of as super-spy type comic that is nevertheless laced with deep humor and set in a noir world where a top mob boss is a giant octopus. At times that feels almost Lovecraftian. Brown’s designs for characters, locations, and lowlifes in the underworld are so gorgeous that I can only recommend that you go see the comic immediately. The comic has been running for a year, so there’s plenty to catch up on.
Each installment of the comic, when posted, consists of around half a page of comics that then has digital layers and aspects of motion in a similar vein to Thrillbent’s approach to adding motion features to comics. Brown’s keen eye for composition really shines through when using this technology, frequently overlaying final panels that have the equivalent of a page-turn dramatic effect in print or full-page digital comics.
If you haven’t read Dash Hudson, you’re missing out, just as I was. Thankfully, I finally found out about this remarkable and madcap comic.
Check out Dash Hudson right here at Ghostek and stay tuned for future installments every week from a true master of the comics medium.
