Heavy Metal #286, “The Magick Special” arrives in shops this week on Wednesday, May 31st, 2017. In keeping with the theme of the issue, there are some included essays about magic and the relationship between magic and art, starting with an essay by Grant Morrison called “Beyond the Word and the Fool” and one by Frank Frazetta’s son about the “Reign of Wizardry” cover on the magazine.
Clive Barker is also interviewed about magic, which he describes as a “secret code”. A gallery section in this issue also includes cards based on the 72 demons of the Ars Goetia, the first section of the famous grimoire (or spell book) The Lesser Key of Solomon.
For Heavy Metal #286, Cover A is by David Stoupakis and it depicts Heavy Metal’s Editor in Chief and “magick expert” Grant Morrison. Cover B is “Reign of Wizardry,” a painting by Frank Frazetta, and cover C is a piece by Atomahawk artist Ian Bederman.
