Over the holiday weekend, rumors persisted that Samuel L. Jackson would return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming Captain Marvel. And, according to Deadline, the rumor was in fact correct.
As they report, Jackson will return as Nick Fury: former Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., joining Brie Larson as Carol Danvers. Few plot details have emerged, but Half Nelson directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck are on board to guide Larson as the star of the highly anticipated film. Meanwhile, feel free to speculate how Carol’s appearance in the MCU inspires Fury to return from the shadows. When we last saw him, he was flying a helicarrier with Avengers markings, but was absent from Captain America: Civil War. He even disappeared during the most trying times of Phil Coulson’s life over on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
The Jackson rumor first surfaced Saturday on the Twitter feed of Omega Underground co-founder Christopher M, who also said shooting would being in January. It is unclear if this will also turn out to be true, but his success rate is pretty flush at the moment.
Captain Marvel was originally scheduled for release next year, but the addition of Spider-Man: Homecoming to the schedule pushed the film into a slot following Avengers: Infinity War. Some reports suggest Larson will debut as Carol in that film and we eagerly await set photos proving that to be the case.
But no matter her Avengers status, Captain Marvel will finally arrive in theaters on March 8th, 2019.
