TV’s Squirrel Girl has been chosen.
According The Hollywood Reporter, This is Us‘ Milana Vayntrub, who you may also recognize from AT&T commercials, will play Doreen Green on Freeform’s Marvel-based sitcom New Warriors. Derek Theler, already familiar to Freeform audiences from Baby Daddy will play Mister Immortal.
The ten-episode series will see the team — also including Jeremy Tardy as Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy as Speedball, Matthew Moy as Microbe and Kate Comer as Debrii — adjusting to their powers in “a world where bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates.” There series is part of an effort to broaden the scope of Freeform’s viewership. It is also not the only Marvel series set to arrive on the cable channel in the next few years. It will be joined by Cloak & Dagger, which sees the Marvel pair re-imagined as a teen drama.
“We’re so lucky to have assembled such a diverse and incredibly talented cast,” said Marvel TV chief Jeph Loeb in a statement. “We can’t wait for the fans to see what’s in store when we unleash these iconic characters into the world!”
While many will be excited to see the new TV Squirrel Girl in action, some will no doubt be devastated. Last summer, Anna Kendrick’s brother sent her a cache of Unbeatable Squirrel Girl comics in a effort to get her to campaign for the role. It led to a week of media frenzy. Shortly thereafter, Stranger Things‘ Shannon Purser asked who she needed to talk to in order to become Doreen, leading to even more frenzy on social media sites.
Of course, both actors have plenty to keep them busy, so I imagine they won’t be too down about missing out on the role.
New Warriors comes to Freeform in 2018.
