2000AD Celebrates Its 40th In Style At Thought Bubble This September

by Oliver MacNamee

While the US primes itself for another San Diego Comic Con, here in the UK we have our own very special conventions too. Over in the States you may believe that there fancy London is where it’s at, but it ain’t always the case and I would strongly argue that the mighty North of England must surely take the crown for a comic-con without precedence.

And, that con is the Thought Bubble Festival, situated in Leeds and spanning a week of events culminating in the much loved comic con over the weekend of September 21st – 23rd right in the heart of the city. It helps that its my old university town too, mind, as it’s a great city to party in, as I will once more prove through rigorous scientific studies this year too. I’ll let you know how I got on, I’m sure.

Well, from what I will remember and what appears on my phone, at least.

You can read all about the stellar line up here (not many cons either side of the pond can boast DC’s curator and, to some, rock god, Gerard Way, as a guest, now can they?) but I’m more interested in the Friday night booze up courtesy of 2000AD and publisher Rebellion, who will be welcoming in the weekend with an art jam at the official pre-con party which is running from 8:30pm till late at Belgrave Music Hall & Canteen in Leeds City Centre and is supported by the Leeds College of Art Students Union on Friday night. And here I thought I was going to have a quiet night ahead of trying to strong-arm a few of the guests into being interviewed over the weekend.

Of course, tickets are going to be limited and, I imagine, in high demand so if you do fancy a night of live art, music and Northern hospitality (trust me, we’re great guys) you might want to grab a ticket or two now. Attendees will receive an exclusive Vice Press mini-print, bit whether they will last the night or not is another matter.

I must admit, although this year 2000AD have really shown others how to to celebrate their 40th Anniversary in style. And, I’m more than happy to raise a glass (again) to all the hard working droids at 2000AD who make the magic happen weekly.

See you at the bar!
