For Tommy Wiseau (James Franco), delivering one of the most infamous lines in one of the most infamously bad movies was not easy. But it does make a great teaser for A24’s upcoming film The Disaster Artist.
Based on the book by Greg Sestero, The Disaster Artist stars Franco and his brother Dave Franco as Wiseau and Sestero. The two met in a San Francisco acting class. And after Sestero moved to Los Angeles to pursue his career, Wiseau followed him with an idea for film. The result is the cult-classic cheese fest The Room, but making the film is a story all its own.
As a fan of cheese, The Room was one of the most epic theater-going experiences. It was not unlike what The Rocky Horror Picture Show was for earlier generations. To see some of Sestero’s on-set memories of making The Room come to life will be a real treat.
But I also can’t help but wonder if Wiseau, an unusual looking dude, always fancied himself as looking — and maybe even being — Franco? If nothing else, Franco is living the life Wiseau wanted. According to some reports, Franco would direct scenes as Wiseau. It almost seems like vindication for the mysterious trash auteur. Then again, it all depend on how sympathetic Franco makes him. Being a fan of both men’s craziness, I cannot wait to see this.
Also featuring Seth Rogen, Ari Graynor, Alison Brie, Jacki Weaver, and Josh Hutcherson, The Disaster Artist opens on December 1st.
