There’s A Second, Scarier Mental Ward In The Unsound #3

by Hannah Means Shannon

There are very few comics where as soon as I can get them in front of my face in whatever format is available–digital, print, interpretive dance–I must experience them at that instant. The Unsound, published by Boom! Studios, is one of those comics and the third issue arrives in shops this Wednesday, August 9th, 2017.

The first two issues were so subtly terrifying and creepy that I really didn’t know what to expect this time, but as the solicit text for this issue reveals, Ashli and her companions are going to discover that there’s a second, even more hauntingly disturbing mental ward on a lower level of the current asylum they work in. Folks, that is a masterful upping of the ante on this series.

Written by someone whose horror chops are so well founded that the only surprise is that he writes all kinds of comics successfully, too, Cullen Bunn is chauffering this tour of a purgatorial hospital. Artist Jack T. Cole’s disturbing imagery is what’s going to worm its way into your mind, though. It’s all in that slightly wavering linework and disarming use of pastel colors, too.

Here’s our advance look at the interiors on issue #3 of The Unsound, your must-buy horror for this week’s comics:
