The Suicide Squad sequel may soon have a director in the form of The Accountant‘s Gavin O’Connor.
Variety reports the filmmaker is in talks to write and direct the film, taking over from writer/director David Ayer; who may or may not be developing a solo film for Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. O’Connor beat out names like Jaume Collet-Serra and Mel Gibson to get to the negotiation table and — wait, the Mel Gibson thing was real?
In any event, Will Smith and Robbie are set to return as Deadshot and Harley. It is presumed other surviving members of Task Force X — like Jai Courtney’s Captain Boomerang and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje‘ Killer Croc — will also return. The only other actor mentioned in the report is Jared Leto, who may also be in that Harley Quinn movie if the Ayer version is dead. The rumor mill around Warner Bros. and its DC Entertainment properties is full of whispers and recalls the Dothraki saying “Words are wind.”
Having not seen The Accountant, I can’t really judge O’Connor’s abilities as a director. On the box office front, the film took in enough cash for the studio to develop a sequel. That certainly earns him a credit to take on a project which is still important to Warner Bros. and their so-called DC Extended Universe. He also directed the fairly well received Joel Egderton/Tom Hardy boxing film Warrior and the Natalie Portman western Jane Got a Gun.
The studio hopes to begin filming within the year.
