Warner Bros. Pictures has released the trailer for the upcoming Tomb Raider. Based on the recent rebooted game series, it promises to introduce a more grounded and realistic Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) than the older game and film series. Does it? Let’s take a look.
Well, it certainly looks a lot like the first Tomb Raider reboot game with Trinity and the island and jumping onto that WWII era bomber. Although, it seems more heightened and cartoonish than the game in a few moments, particularly that button at the end.
As it happens, I am a fan of the recent games. In fact, they’re the first Tomb Raider games I’ve actually liked. But video game movies are hard sells — creatively at least. The first Lara Croft: Tomb Raider film did enough box office to earn a sequel, but it is not fondly remembered these days. And other than that, video game adaptations tend to be as dull as Assassin’s Creed or as woefully misguided as Super Mario Bros. So while this may resemble an actual film, it still has plenty of mountain to climb before it breaks the curse of video game movies.
Tomb Raider comes to theaters on March 16th, 2018.
