Here come the Men in Black (again).
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Sony will release a Men In Black spinoff in 2019. Iron Man writers Matt Holloway and Art Marcum are set to write the script with Steven Spielberg returning as executive producer. The producing team of Laurie MacDonald and Walter Parkes — who produced the original trilogy — are also set to return.
But notably absent are Agents J and K. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are sitting this one out in favor of a new pair of agents.
Sony’s Men in Black series is based on the Malibu Comic book of the same name. Written by Lowell Cunningham with Sandy Carruthers on art, the original three-issue miniseries told the exploits of Agents Kay and Jay as there dealt with supernatural threats to the status quo. In a subsequent miniseries and a number of one-shots, an agent named Ecks learns the truth about the Men in Black and goes rogue. Besides the naming convention and the sleek suits, the series also introduced the neuralyzer; an important device in the film series.
The new spinoff project comes after the studio attempted to weld the Men in Black franchise with 21 Jump Street. The proposed film — based on a joke in 22 Jump Street — would have seen Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum’s characters join the MiB with humorous results. Eventually, all involved agreed the two film worlds would not mesh well together.
I still think it was an inspired idea.
The Men in Black spinoff is scheduled for release on May 17th, 2019.
