Dynamite Entertainment have started rolling out their pre-New York Comic Con announcements, and the first is that their legacy character Dejah Thoris, The Princess of Mars, is going to be returning in January 2018.
Dynamite successfully ran a promotion on Sheena’s zero issue, retailing the introductory issue for 25 cents, and they’re going to be following the same model with Dejah Thoris. Sheena #0, just for reference, sold over 120,000 copies.
Writer Amy Chu (Poison Ivy, Red Sonja, KISS) will bring the character back to comics in Dejah Thoris #0. Originally appearing in seminal author Edgar Rice Burroughs’ book, A Princess of Mars, Dejah Thoris will appear in a story that tells her origin. After learning of the legendary Gardens of Mars from her grandfather, Deja Thoris, Princess of Helium, she sets off on a “dangerous scientific expedition to save her dying planet”. But things don’t go the way she planned when she encounters a mysterious Green Martian prisoner.
Writer Amy Chu says:
Dejah Thoris has always been a complex character, with the bearing of a princess, the mind of a scientist, and the heart of a Red Martian trying to save her dying planet. This new series is a Dejah Thoris story, not a John Carter story, and could be considered a prequel to The Princess of Mars – an adventure of the purest sort, like Indiana Jones, but on Mars.
