The Occult, Conspiracy, Reincarnation, And Insanity – Regression Vol. 1: Way Down Deep

by Brendan M. Allen

Celebrated horror writer Cullen Bunn (Harrow County, The Damned, The Sixth Gun), artist Danny Luckert (Haunted), and colorist Marie Enger (Pistolwhip, 2 Sisters) will release REGRESSION, VOL. 1: WAY DOWN DEEP this November from Image Comics. This trade paperback will collect issues #1-5 of the mind-bending horror series.

Plagued by ghastly waking nightmares, Adrian reluctantly agrees to past-life regression hypnotherapy. As his consciousness is cast back through time, Adrian witnesses a scene of horrific debauchery and diabolism. Waking, he is more unsettled than before, and with good reason—something has followed him back. Adrian descends into a world of occult conspiracy, mystery, reincarnation, and insanity from which there is no escape.

Adrian’s a pretty simple guy, except for that one thing. He’s plagued by vivid waking nightmares that are so intense they invade every area of his life. His friend Molly finally persuades Adrian to seek help in the form of hypnotherapy with a guy she knows, Sid. One session with Sid was enough to open a door between Adrian’s present and an unspeakable evil in one of his past lives.

That’s when Adrian’s life really starts falling apart. Sid turns up dead, tortured and mutilated in his apartment. Adrian is a prime suspect, having made multiple frantic calls to Sid’s cell on the night of the murder. He also has a sketchy alibi, and his nervous tics make it obvious he’s hiding something big. Fact is, Adrian’s not so sure himself that he didn’t do it.

Things just get weirder from there.

Writer Cullen Bunn is in rare form with Regression. Bunn is drawing from real life memories he had as a child, growing up watching his father Franklin perform as a stage hypnotist. Bunn’s first hand experience with hypnotherapy, subconscious, and past life regression comes through in the script.

My father was a hypnotist, and I watched him perform a number of past life regressions. I thought about those regressions quite a bit over the years. Somewhere along the way, a troubling thought dawned on me. What if one of those past lives were evil? Or possessed by evil? And what if the regression gave them a finger hold in someone’s life? What if they could hitch a ride to the present?

It’s really hard to separate art and color in this book, because Danny Luckert’s art and Marie Enger’s color are in such harmony and are perfectly suited to this story. This art team has a way of balancing the banality of normal, everyday doings with the absolute terror Adrian is experiencing. Look no further than the spread on pages 12-13 to see exactly what I mean.

If you’re a fan Harrow County, Redneck, God Country, The Damned, Outcast, or Dead Inside, buy this book. Falling somewhere between crime procedural, horror, and psychological thriller, Regression isn’t to be missed.
