Between Indian Hill and Ra’s Al Ghul’s functional mortality, Gotham has introduced a fair amount of outlandish ideas into its once-straightforward narrative about Jim Gordon. And as last night’s debut of Solomon Grundy (Drew Powell) proves, the show is definitely better off embracing some of the wilder elements of the Batman mythos; whether its freeze rays, plant zombies or a boy and his guardian fighting crime.
And it seems next week’s episode will keep that momentum going with the arrival of Professor Pyg. First appearing in the pages of Batman (Vol.1) #666, he made an immediate impact in the post-apocalyptic nightmare Gotham Grant Morrison and Andy Kubert created in that issue. At the time, Morrison said “We hear a lot about Batman facing crazy villains but we tried to make this guy seem genuinely disturbed and disconnected.” He succeeded in his ambitions and brought the character back to the present day with a Circus of the Strange and an army of Dollotrons; masked and reconfigured victims ready to do his bidding. As one of the most remarkable villains introduced in the last twenty years, he survived into the New 52 continuity and appeared in one of the better sequences in the Batman: Arkham Knight video game. I mean, it was definitely one of my favorite fights in the game.
But will Pyg (Michael Cerveris ) make a similar impact on Gotham? If this preview of next week’s episode is any indication, the answer is yes.
Gotham airs Thursdays on FOX.
