The new historical fiction comic series entitled The Death Defying has started a Kickstarter campaign to fund the first issue. The campaign was started by Eisner nominated, or as he describes, “Eisner losing” writer, Chris Sebela. Sebela is known for such comics as High Crimes, Welcome Back, and is currently working on Blue Beetle for DC.
The series is inspired by the relationship between author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and famous escape artist Harry Houdini and how their differing views on spiritualism and the afterlife lead to friction between the two. It is described as “[a] two-fisted, occult, historical adventure about the strange war between famed former friends Arthur Conan Doyle & Harry Houdini.”
The rest of the creative team include artist Gavin Guidry (The Night Driver, Welcome Back), colorist Marissa Louise (Spell on Wheels, Escape From New York, Mystery Girl), and letterer Micah Meyers (The Disasters, The Night Driver).
The book will be published by Two-Headed Press, which is known for crowdfunding creator-owned comics. Sebela is no stranger to Kickstarter, as he has successfully funded projects in the past including most recently, the culinary crime story Short Order Crooks.
You can check out the video below, and the campaign is running through Tuesday, November 14, 2017.
