Dark Horse has announced that in the summer of 2018, they’ll be bringing writer and artist Stephen McCranie‘s (Mal and Chad) space opera webcomic to print as a four-volume graphic novel series.
Currently serialized on Webtoons.com with over 50,000 readers, McCranie’s Space Boy is a “coming of age story of a high-school-aged girl who belongs in a different time, a boy possessed by emptiness as deep as space, an alien artifact, mysterious murder, and a love that crosses light years”.
It’s becoming more common for webcomics to get picked up for print distribution by publishers, but committing to a four volume series is a unique event so far, and may pave the way for more longform webcomics to make it into the publishing world.
In Space Boy, Amy lives on a mining colony in out in deep space until her dad loses his job and they are forced to move back to Earth. Amy has to say goodbye to her best friend, then enter a cryotube where she will spend the next 30 years frozen in a state of suspended animation heading home.
