The probability of Gambit finally happening ticks up a notch with word Lizzy Caplan may join the cast.
Variety reports the Masters of Sex star is in talks to join the production in an undisclosed role. If the negotiations are successful, she will be the first actor to join the Gore Verbiniski directed version since his own announcement some months ago. But casting female leads is hardly a marker that Gambit will go into production. Shortly before director Rupert Wyatt walked away from the project in 2015, Lea Seydoux was tipped to play Gambit’s fellow theif Belladonna. Within weeks, Wyatt was gone and Seydoux, who — according to Deadline — had the offer to star, vanished into the mists. The part was never cast when director Doug Liman took over the project, but through it all, star Channing Tatum has remained attached to headline the film, should it ever get made.
Since Liman’s departure, the script was rewritten and it is unclear if Caplan’s role will be Belladonna or some other key figure from Gambit’s past.
Should she take the part, this will be Caplan’s second appearance in a film based on Marvel characters. She played thief-turned-S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Claire Wise in Marvel One-Shot: Item 42.
Gambit is currently scheduled for release on February 14th, 2019.
