Tradewaiting – November 22nd, 2017 Releases: The Ultimates Vol. 2, Wonder Woman: The Golden Age Vol. 1 & More

by Noah Sharma

A lot of comics come out every week. It’s easy to get lost in the sea of #1s and dramatic new status quos as they crash. That’s why I’m here. Whether you said you’d revisit checking that series out when it was collected in trade, or you simply never noticed the announcement of that awesome OGN, whether you’re just waiting for that hardcover to come out in trade, or have been longing for a collection of your favorite stories since childhood, Tradewaiting is here for you, with the complete Diamond list of graphic novels and collections as well as some recommendations to scoop up.

So, without further ado, here’s what’s coming to the bookshelves of your LCS this fine week of November 22nd, 2017.

HIGHLIGHTS

The Ultimates² vol 2: Eternity War

The conclusion of an epic cycle of stories from one of Marvel’s most talented writers, Eternity War by Al Ewing is a truly incredible bit of serialized comics storytelling. With the world already falling down around them, America Chavez and the Ultimates discover that all of creation is under attack by another reality, the original multiverse, the First Firmament. As the Ultimates struggles to contain the fallout on Earth, Galactus must gather the cavalry and the Maker, the villainous Ultimate Reed Richards, seeks to profit off the super science at the end of the multiverse.

It’s a trip.

The Ultimates is a return and a love letter to the best of Marvel’s cosmic strangeness. Combining the ferocious creativity of Jack Kirby with the high drama of Bendis, with just a dash of Bronze Age wryness, The Ultimates² rushes to a close that’s as overwhelmingly wild as it is impressively readable.

And though the cynical might look warily at the “Secret Empire” tie-ins contained within its pages, I prefer to think of “Secret Empire” as a tie-in to this. That’s not just my snark and dissatisfaction either, Ewing was already one of the only writers to truly find the joyful Nazi-punching possibilities of “Secret Empire” over in U.S.Avengers, but here he, surprisingly respectfully, casts the whole of the event as a mere echo of this grander and, in my opinion, better story. As above, so below. It’s an altogether more interesting refutation of the superhero genre’s frequent accusations of conservatism and fascism.

To top it all off, the books looks great, with art from Travel Foreman and rising star Aud Koch. I’ve already written about the series finale here, but I honestly think that this series is just that good, especially at the fairly affordable price of $15.99.

I wholeheartedly urge you to check out the entire Ultimates run and, as of this week, you can do it all in trade.

Wonder Woman: The Golden Age vol. 1

If the responses I’m hearing to Justice League (fan, critic, and professional, alike) are representative, I think we’ve passed the point of ambiguities: this is Wonder Woman’s time. Grabbing hold of the zeitgeist, incorporating the mythological fiction and inclusivity that are the latest media buzzwords, and finally supported in film, Wonder Woman is bigger now that perhaps she’s ever been.

All those eyes on the character mean people want to get to know her and DC has made that increasingly easy this week with the release of Wonder Woman: The Golden Age Vol. 1. Presenting the earliest Wonder Woman stories in a more complete and (currently) cheaper form than either the Wonder Woman Archives or Wonder Woman Chronicles series, this softcover collection offers readers almost twenty of the Amazon Princess’ first stories within a rather lovely package.

Though many new comic readers labor under a misconception that they need to catch up with a character from the beginning (a relatively poor reason to grab this collection for a number of reasons), those looking to see who Wonder Woman was at her beginnings or intrigued by the political leanings of William Moulton Marston will find a strange and wonderful world laid out between these pages. With a very different understanding of myth and superheroes than flourished in Diana’s later history, Golden Age Wonder Woman is a flavor all its own. There’s something both charming and stern about it, reflecting the now alien childhood and adulthood of the 1940s.

Selling for a moderately expensive $24.99, Wonder Woman: The Golden Age packs a lot of stories into its nearly four-hundred pages. There’s never been a better time to check out William Marston and Harry G. Peter‘s original Wonder Woman stories and this collection makes it easier, not to mention more aesthetically pleasing, than ever.
