In a new Inside Look video, Supergirl executive producers Jessica Queller and Robert Rovner discuss some of the events in tonight’s episode. For one, they talk about how Reign (Odette Annable) will make her presence known in National City. But, perhaps more importantly, they mention Mon-El (Chris Wood) and Imra’s (Amy Jackson) affiliation with the Legion of Superheroes. And even though both producers and characters simply call it “The Legion,” we know exactly what they’re talking about.
And it seems from the clips, Supergirl will fashion the history of the Legion out of both of its primary origin stories. As originally suggested in the pages of Adventure Comics #247, the group will be inspired by stories of a Kryptonian who came to Earth and did good, selfless things. In the 1990s, Superboy and Supergirl were unavailable to the Legion creative team. Their revision of the original concept saw Mon-El — renamed “Valor” at the time — helping to establish various human colonies before spending 1000 years in the Phantom Zone. When he was rescued, he learned his deeds inspired the Legion. On the show, it appears his stories of Supergirl inspire super-powered people from all over the United Planets to form the Legion.
Which is a perfectly acceptable adaptation of the concept as long as there is still room for Matter-Eater Lad.
Come to think of it, there are still four more containers on the ship. Presumably Brainiac 5 is in one of the sleep pods, but who are the other Legionnaires? Perhaps we’ll find out tonight.
Supergirl airs Mondays on The CW.
