The Gifted’s Empower Academy Ad Is A Chilling Metaphor

by Erik Amaya

The Gifted has not been shy about using the mutant metaphor for any and every marginalized class it can think of. References to a wall and the Mutant Underground’s efforts to ship mutants to Mexico clearly take their cues from a certain presidential agenda. But it has also been used to address issues of ethnicity, religion and sexual orientation.

Which appears to be the absolutely chilling metaphor behind this ad for the Empower Academy on the show’s YouTube page.

Also, bravo on whoever thought of twisting “I am more than my power” into a mantra of control. Presumably the academy, itself a nightmare version of Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, will be at the heart of tonight’s episode, which sees the Underground going on the offensive and Agent Turner cornering Lauren and Andy.

You almost have to wonder if the Fenris Twin will end up at Empower for a few episodes. Waking up at the academy would make for a good mid-season finale.

The Gifted airs Mondays on FOX.
