The CW has released a new promo for the upcoming series Black Lightning. In it, an unnamed character, likely James Remar as Peter, announces the return of Black Lighting, which may be a bit confusing to casual viewers of CW shows like Supergirl.
The series, which is a 100% new program, centers on Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams), a retired superhero raising his two daughters and working as the principle at a local charter high school. But when an old family foe returns to pollute the streets with drugs and violence, he’s forced to become Black Lightning once more and protect his city.
It is a prompt which sets the show apart from the other CW supershows — they all began as origin stories — but can also lead to some misunderstanding. A member of my own family sent me a text after it aired asking me if I already watch the show. I responded by saying it’s a new show. They sent the follow text: “But it said ‘he’s back.'”
Joining Cress are China Anne McClain and Nafessa Williams as his daughters Jennifer and Anissa Peirce, Christine Adams Jefferson’s ex-wife Lynn, Damon Gupton as Inspector Henderson, and Marvin “Krondon” Jones III as Tobias Whale.
The show will be taking Legends of Tomorrow‘s 9pm Tuesday slot when it debuts on January 16th.
