Stargate Command, the Stargate branded streaming service, has released a trailer for the upcoming prequel series Stargate Origins.
The premise is pretty sound as it returns to Catherine Langford, the woman, played by Viveca Lindfors in the original film, who brought Daniel Jackson (James Spader) into the Stargate project. She’s also the young girl in the film’s opening moments who witnesses the Egyptian Stargate being unearthed in the late 1920s. But as the trailer reveals, Catherine — now played by Ellie Gall — is a young woman attempting to keep the Stargate and its secrets safe from the Nazis.
And yes, that is Star Trek: Enterprise‘s Connor Trinneer as Catherine’s father.
Catherine was always one of the more enigmatic elements of the film. The subsequent Stargate SG-1 featured her in a handful of episodes and offered some of her backstory; including an incident in which the Stargate was opened in 1945. But with so much ground to cover with her, it is definitely the right aspect of the Stargate mythos to focus on, even if it means the Stargate will always be a locked MacGuffin and not a portal to otherworldly adventures. Then again, maybe there was another accidental opening of the gate she never told Jackson about.
Or, who knows, maybe this is the start of a new Stargate chronology. Watching Nazis get through to Abydos and getting burned alive by Ra has a certain appeal.
Stargate Origins debuts Feb. 15, 2018 on Stargate Command.
