Fire, Magic, And Myth – An Early Look At Firebug From Johnnie Christmas And Tamra Bonvillain

by Hannah Means Shannon

In March, Image Comics are bringing us a full collection of the mythological tale Firebug which originally debuted as a serialized short in the indie comics anthology Island edited by Brandon Graham.

Written and drawn by Johnnie Christmas, whose work you will recognize from Angel Catbird and Sheltered, and colored by the stellar Tamra Bonvillain of Doom Patrol, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur and more, and lettered by Ariana Maher of Ringside and Arclight, Firebug’s unusual protagonist is a volcano goddess named Keegan who sets out to wander the world at a time when prophecies about the salvation or destruction she could bring to world may be coming true.

Image says:

In the shadow of a sacred volcano, from which Keegan derives her powers, lies the ancient city of Azar. To unravel the mysteries of her past, Keegan and her friends must get to Azar before it is overrun by a horde of forest monsters. Meanwhile, the nefarious Cult of the Goddess has plans to summon forces as old as time to extinguish Keegan’s flame permanently.

Image have released an early preview of this visually stunning and interesting story:
