This week’s episode of The X-Files was definitely an improvement. Though, I think we can safely say seasons 10 and 11 may be happening inside that simulation Langly (Dean Haglund) tried to warn Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) about.
And while it was a much better episode than the season 11 debut, there was still something off about it. A sort of strange otherness which may be the point; what with Mulder and Scully apparently living together, Barbara Hershey’s character taking over as spokesperson for the Conspiracy and the continuing distrust of Skinner (Mitch Pileggi). But you have to love the incredibly timely digs at the current administration and their conflict with the FBI.
So if we’re still inside the simulation, it may explain away the plot of next week’s episode. Scully and Mulder visit a town where people keep confronting their doubles. Is it a parallel Earth bleeding through into ours or further evidence of the program going haywire? Either way, it still means Scully will have to confront her doppelgänger, if the following preview is to be believed.
The X-Files airs Wednesdays on FOX.
