Con Countdown: A New Look For MCM Birmingham And David Finch Comes To Town

by Oliver MacNamee

It would seem ReedPOP’s influence on their newly acquired MCM Comic Con UK shows, which we previously covered, is beginning to filter through with a new look logo and a guest list for their upcoming Birmingham show (March 17th -18th) that includes a rather big name DC artist, David Finch, as well as Guardians of The Galaxy alumni, Michael Rooker (Yondu) and Sean Gunn (Kraglin). While the London show last Fall was the first with MCM at the helm, it would seem this is their first show of this year that’s getting all the love.

It’s a given that the MCM UK shows have a number of big name media guests, as they have in the past with appearances by Starsky and Hutch, The Bionic Man, and Woman, as well as any The Walking Dead actor who’s recently died on the show. In fact, it was a good litmus test to work out who does die each year by who comes to the Spring shows, one of two MCM events put on in the UK’s second largest city.

But, it’s something of a statement of intent, I think, to be including David Finch as a spotlighted guest. This can only mean good things for the many, many detractors of such events who worry about the comic book content for a show using the name ‘comic-con’. And with promises of a larger Comics Village too, it would seem ReedPOP have not sat on their laurels in acquiring and developing this popular show.

And, if that wasn’t enough, Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens) will also be in town for the weekend too. Something for everyone? Maybe, just maybe.

See you there.
