Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns from the February hiatus this week and when it does, it will air its 99th episode. Which means a huge milestone, show 100, is right around the corner.
But another milestone looms in the distance, the season five finale; which could also double as a series ender should ABC finally disavow the beloved by poorly-rated program. In either event, executive producers Marissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon are “ready for if this is the end.”
“We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way,” Whedon told Entertainment Weekly. The site noted that the show’s viewership figures are so dreadful that it is only beating the recently-canceled Once Upon A Time among ABC’s scripted dramas. The producers, who are currently writing the season’s final episode said they can pivot should they follow Once into cancellation town. “There are certain things that we’re putting in that at the last minute could be adjusted,” Whedon added. Nonetheless, the next story pod, which properly begins in show 100, will see its conclusion no matter what ABC decides for the series.
And, apparently, that new pod will be something of a “game-changer.” Will Coulson (Clark Gregg) reveal that he is dying while also revealing the nature of his deal with Ghost Rider (Gabriel Luna)? Will Yo-Yo (Natalia Cordova-Buckley) convince the team to change history by letting him die? Will Daisy (Chloe Bennet) finally find redemption? There’s still plenty to accomplish before S.H.I.E.L.D. closes out its fifth — and possibly last — season.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Fridays on ABC.
