The Handmaid’s Tale star Elisabeth Moss is the latest name to join New Line Cinema’s adaptation of The Kitchen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Based on the Vertigo series by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle, the story centers on group of mob wives — Kath, Raven and Angie — who decide to keep running the rackets in Hell’s Kitchen when their husbands all land in the clink simultaneously. According to earlier reports, the film will be a “a gritty drama” maintaining the comic book’s 1970s setting. Straight Outta Compton screenwriter Andrea Berloff adapted the comic book and will make her directorial debut with the feature.
The film also stars Tiffany Haddish as “woman willing to kill anyone in the way of her plan” and Melissa McCarthy as the woman who decides the three should keep the rackets going. Moss’s character is described as an abused wife who comes to enjoy the violent aspects of the business.
The project was first announced in July of 2016 as part of New Line’s commitment to produce projects based on Vertigo titles with DC Entertainment. New Line is also the producing partner on next year’s Shazam! which stars Asher Angel as Billy Batson, a young teen who can become Earth’s Mightiest Mortal (Zachary Levi) by uttering a special magic word. It is due out on April 5th, 2019.
The Kitchen opens on September 20th, 2019.
