While The CW’s annual renewal of its superhero lineup may seems like a formality, the future of several CW superhero shows like Black Lightning and Legends of Tomorrow were not assured. But fans wondering about their futures can now rest easy as word comes that Black Lightning and the entire Arrowverse will return for the 2018-2019 season.
According to Variety, the network has renewed Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl and Legends; along with Riverdale, Supernatural, Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. Of the group, Arrow was the most assured as producers began talking about season 7 as early as last summer. Supergirl and Legends appeared the most vulnerable as the network announced plans for the two shows to share the same timeslot after the 2017 winter hiatus.
Of their new shows debuting this season, only Black Lightning and Dynasty have been renewed so far, while decisions on Life Sentence and Valor — and old stalwarts iZombie and The 100 — will wait until May.
For Legends, this means the fulfillment of plans to bring on Matt Ryan’s John Constantine as a permanent member of the Waverider crew. It also suggests the show’s wacky tone will also remain in tact. Meanwhile, Black Lightning will continue to be a singular voice apart from the Arrowverse while telling its tale of corporate greed and the effects on the inner city. As for the other three Arrowverse shows, it will probably be business as usual with Arrow getting lost within itself, The Flash‘s Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) screwing up again and Supergirl quietly proving people from different races (and planets) can coexist together.
The network also plans to expand into Sunday night programing, which may mean a new slot for one of the superheroes shows or, as shocking as it may seem, a sixth superhero program on the network.
