While it is still unclear if Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will return for another year on ABC, executive producers Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon previously made it clear the final episode of the year can serve as both a season or series finale depending on the network’s decision in May. But it seems the producers may be bracing for the worst.
According to SpoilerTV, the 22nd and final episode of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s fifth season will be titled “The End.” That would certainly seem like the show has an opinion on the matter. But historically, not every television show using “The End” as an episode title actually concludes.
“The End” was the title of The X-Files fifth season finale. Leading into that summer’s X-Files feature film, it saw the temporary closure of the X-Files office. When season 6 debuted the following Autumn, the first episode was titled “The Beginning.” Beyond the story implications, the titles of both episodes also commented on the production’s move from Vancouver to Los Angeles that summer; “The End” being the last episode filmed in Canada.
If one were to read tea leaves, it is certainly possible S.H.I.E.L.D. will end its fifth season in a similar place with the agency totally disbanded and the group scattered to build new lives even after saving the Earth from annihilation. It’s also possible the show will move to Vancouver in order to make continued production more feasible. But again, that is just a guess as pretty much anything is possible before “The End” airs on May 18th.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Fridays on ABC.
