Some actors just can’t get enough vampire action.
Deadline reports that former Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder will lead Netflix adaptation of the IDW comic book and prose series V-Wars created by Jonathan Mayberry. Somerhalder will star as Dr. Luther Swann, a physician who watches in horror as his best friend turns into a murderous creature thanks to a new a terrible pathogen. As the diseases spreads, the resulting creatures are dubbed vampires while conventional humans begin to group up in camps. Swann attempts to find a cure while his friend, Michael Fayne, becomes a prominent vampire leader.
Besides starring in the series, Somerhalder is slated to directed episodes of the series, though Stargate Atlantis director Brad Turner will helm the pilot. William Laurin and Glenn Davis will serve as showrunners.
“We are thrilled to partner with Netflix to bring the multifaceted world that Jonathan Maberry created to audiences worldwide,” IDW Entertainment president David Ozer said in a statement. “We could not have dreamed of a better choice than Ian Somerhalder to bring his keen understanding of this genre from his years of starring in The Vampire Diaries to lead the cast of V-Wars as Dr. Luther Swann and to be a creative force on this series, as well as to serve as a director this season.”
It is unclear how quickly the series will move forward, but Netflix committed to a ten-episode first season.
