Indie filmmaker Cathy Yen, best known for her recent Dead Pigs, will reportedly helm the next Warner Bros. Pictures film to feature Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.
According to Deadline, that complex wording is important because there are four projects in development featuring the character and actor: Suicide Squad 2, Harley Quinn v. The Joker, Gotham City Sirens and Yan’s feature. The film will reportedly be based on Birds of Prey with a script by Christina Hodson; who recently picked up writing duties on Batgirl.
It is unclear which if the traditional Birds of Prey characters will appear or what Harley’s function will be in the picture — she was a recurring character on the short-lived WB television show — but it is clear Warner Bros. is trying to hold onto the momentum gained by Wonder Woman‘s stunning debut and its exceptional female filmmaker Patty Jenkins. Deadline’s report also states Robbie, who will produce the film, was adamant about hiring a woman onto the project and that Yan’s pitch for Birds of Prey was “exceptional.”
As always, it is unclear how fast production will commence — the site even mentions a deal between Yan and the studio still needs to be worked out — but the studio apparently wants to being filming by the end of the year.
