I pressed play with great anticipation. Knowing how captivating season 1 of The Handmaid’s Tale was on Hulu made it easy to be excited. Though, there is always a looming fear of a show plummeting into disaster after success due to bad writing or twisted plot lines. With that said, I’m happy to arrive here today with a positive review of Season 2: Episode 1 of The Handmaid’s Tale.
[**WARNING: SPOILERS FOR THE HANDMAID’S TALE SEASON 2 BELOW!]
There is something so unique about this show. It’s not just the fantastic writing. It’s also artfully shot. I feel captivated in every aspect and even though some scenes make me cringe or turn my head, I still want more. Yes, this isn’t a show for the weak-stomached individual. It’s intense and graphic at times, but in my opinion, that is part of what makes it important. This dystopian world is unlike any other, and sometimes tugs at situations that may occur in reality some day.
Main character Offred makes great strides in the season premiere. What begins as an intense punishment for the Handmaids, quickly evolves into Offred’s escape from their twisted world. I was glad to see the Waterford couple in this episode. Even though they are horrid people, I think they are amusing. Offred being able to give Mrs. Waterford some sass after what she’s been through was incredibly satisfying to watch. I enjoy the passion and growth in Offred’s character. Despite everything she’s been through, her goals remain clear. How she will survive and how she won’t get caught is beyond our knowledge as viewers, but I’m definitely sticking around to find out.
You can watch the entire first season of The Handmaid’s Tale, and the first two episodes of Season 2 now on Hulu. I’ll be watching the second episode this weekend and I can’t wait. New episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale premiere every Wednesday.
