May 2nd marks the anniversary of The Battle of Hogwarts in J.K. Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter series. Every year the author takes to Twitter on this day to comment on an aspect of the major event. This year, she tugs at the heartstrings of many as she apologizes for the death of a very loyal character.
So many fans love that adorable elf, and I’m definitely one of them. It looks like killing off the character wasn’t easy for author J.K. Rowling, as she writes:
It's that anniversary again. This year, I apologise for killing someone who didn't die during the #BattleofHogwarts, but who laid down his life to save the people who'd win it. I refer, of course, to Dobby the house elf.

So, how did it happen? Thankfully, Pottermore has provided us with a reminder of the details:
None of us ever want our pals to be hurt, but Dobby was even willing to put himself in danger to save his friends. In Deathly Hallows, Dobby threw himself between Bellatrix Lestrange and Harry, announcing: ‘Dobby has come to save Harry Potter and his friends.’
His unwavering devotion led to Dobby’s heartbreaking death, but to the end he was a loyal friend through and through.
It still brings a tear to my eye, whether I read it on the page or watch it on screen. I think the legacy of Harry Potter remains clear as fans come together on this day to mourn, celebrate, acknowledge these fantastic characters.
