Zinnober Brings Dragons To The Post-Apocalypse This June

by James Ferguson

We’ve seen tons of zombie apocalypses over the years, but none with dragons. I mean, I guess you could count the latest season of Game of Thrones, but that’s a technicality. Scout Comics has announced Zinnober, a series set in a dystopian landscape…with dragons.

Written and illustrated by Ralf Singh, Zinnober is set after a dragon apocalypse in parallel world. The survivors have accepted the dragons’ dominion over the planet, but they do it in very different ways. Most folks stay within the few safe zones in an attempt to rebuilt civilization, but there are others who wish to stay as close to the dragons as possible to worship them as gods.

Zinnober centers on Claire, a woman whose entire family was killed by the dragons. She hates them and that hatred drives her, but she can’t do anything to bring down these winged menaces…until she meets Andrew. This man has some wild theories has to how the dragons can be defeated and Claire decides to follow him down this crazy path to possible revenge.

Although Zinnober deals with dragons, Singh limited the amount of fantasy elements included. He didn’t want magic to be the solution for every problem that popped up. He explains the evolution of the series:

Starting probably five years ago my first draft of Zinnober was more of a mix of Orwell’s 1984 and Blade Runner. It was more like a dystopian science fiction comic. But then I realized that the questions and themes I wanted to explore would be even more fitting for a world similar to our own. So, I totally dropped that dystopian sci fi idea and started from scratch.

Zinnober #1 is set for release on June 27th, 2018. It will feature two different covers, both are available for pre-order.
