Free Comic Book Day 2018: Hanging Out With Brave New World Comics, California

Brave New World Comics has been serving the Santa Clarita Valley for their comic needs. The southern California-based shop has changed owners and locations throughout the years, but one thing it can be counted on is to provide excellent service and a myriad of events for their patrons. I’ve been going to this store, which was the Eisner Spirit of Retail award recipient in 2008, on and off for almost 25 years. They were one of the many businesses to celebrate Free Comic Book Day 2018 this year.

BNW had plenty to offer, and it all could not be contained in the store. They had the 501st manage crowd control and there were plenty of exhibitors that spilled onto the sidewalk including local programs like Geek Girls Society and Light Force Academy. On the comics side, in addition to the free books, Top Cow Productions was previewing some of their titles and creators Megan Hutchison (Rockstars) and Shannon Eric Denton (Star Wars Adventures) were signing. Garry Brown (Crude) was also set to appear but was not there in the morning when I was there. The shop also had table top gaming demos for HeroClix, Star Wars Destiny, and Dungeons and Dragons and had a representative from Sony to provide a sneak peak at the new Spider-Man game on the PS4.

Finally, our executive Editor here at Comicon.com loves showing swag pics so here’s what I picked up for the day. Though Brave New World was the primary shop I hit up, I also swung by YALLWEST and Nuclear Comics & Skate Shop for signings and a few things. I was particularly excited for the Jim Lee and Marguerite Bennett autographs and the self-published comics from Keenan Marshall Keller (The Humans).
