Zachary Levi Offer Up First Look At Shazam

by Erik Amaya

Shazam! star Zachary Levi has been pretty excited to share a real photo of himself as the character formerly known as Captain Marvel. When paparazzi shots began to emerge, they made him look a little odd and he always wanted to respond with something vetted by Warner Bros. Pictures. And it seems he finally has the official photo to share.

Or at least, something which would enter into the wild anyway as he posted this image from the floor of the 2018 Licensing Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada a short time ago:

As an early promo shot for potential licensees, it certainly conveys the right idea: a boy in a grown-up superhero’s body. It’s doubtful the image will appear as seen here on products like action figures or party favors, but it nonetheless presents Shazam! as a lighter film than its DC Films predecessors.

Based on the Captain Marvel created by Bill Parker and C.C Beck in Whiz Comics #2, the film centers on a young boy named Billy Batson (Asher Angel) who is given a magic word which transforms him into the world’s mightiest mortal (Levi). Gifted with the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles, and the speed of Mercury, Billy faces a tough road being a child and a superpowered man all at once.

The film also stars Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freemore, Cooper Andrews, Mark Strong as the villainous Dr. Sivana, and Grace Fulton as another friend of Billy’s who may very well turn out to be fellow superhero Mary Marvel. The film is directed by Lights Out helmer David F. Sandberg, whose social media accounts have been fun to watch as the film comes together. When the film was rumored to be cancelled during one of Warner Bros’ restructurings of DC Films, Sandberg cheekily posted to the thread that no one had told him and he would’ve liked an extra day off. Presumably, the film will have some of that irreverence.

Shazam! opens April 5th 2019.
