As wild as it sounds, Marvel Studio’s Hawkeye will assist Spawn in his upcoming cinematic adventure.
Deadline reports Jeremy Renner, known for his Marvel Cinematic Universe outings as Clint Barton, will play Detective Maximilian “Twitch” Williams in Todd McFarlane’s upcoming directorial debut, Spawn. Described as an “unconventional detective” whose “near fearless compliments Spawn’s demonic powers,” the character has been a staple of Spawn comics books since the 1990s; even receiving his own title alongside fellow detective Sam Burke in Sam and Twitch.
Calling the character the Sir Lancelot to Spawn’s (Jaime Foxx) King Arthur, McFarlane told the site, “I knew the person on screen the most is this police officer, Twitch Williams. We needed as strong a person as possible because he will be the face of the film. I took my naïve Hollywood approach again, and said let’s start at the top and work down. Jeremy was at the top. I’m a huge fan of his. The character doesn’t need to be a bodybuilder or GQ handsome. I was looking for somebody who’s a person you’ve met before; I needed someone who can pull off the grief of an average human being. I’ve seen Jeremy do that in more than a few of his movies.”
The film will be the culmination of McFarlane’s twenty year journey to resurrect his most famous character’s Hollywood prospects after the disastrous 1997 release of Spawn. Since those days, McFarlane has promised fans a much darker film in which Spawn is more monster than hero.
The project is still looking for a distributor.
