Rogue Trooper Movie From Duncan Jones Is Confirmed: What You Need To Know

by Richard Bruton

Over the last few days there have been rumours and teases coming from film director Duncan Jones that his next movie project would be something big, something blue, something very 2000AD!

And now it’s confirmed. Sometime in the future, we’re going to be seeing Rogue Trooper, the classic future war strip make the transition from the pages of The Galaxy’s Greatest Comic to the big screen.

Duncan Jones is a lauded director with four critical and commercial hits to his name; Moon, Source Code, Mute, and Warcraft ok, maybe not so much the critical hit with that one). He’s long been a fan and supporter of 2000AD, and after a few days of speculation over a new superhero movie, he took to Twitter to confirm he’d be at the helm of Rogue Trooper.

Incredibly excited to confirm I’m working on an adaption of Gerry Finley-Day & Dave Gibbons’ 2000AD comic ROGUE TROOPER!
Lot of work ahead though, so we will NOT be at SDCC.

Created by Gerry Finley-Day and Dave Gibbons over 30 years ago, Rogue Trooper made his first appearance back in 2000AD Prog 228. Rogue Trooper is a blue-skinned, genetically-engineered super soldier bred, made, and trained just for the fight of the Southers against the Norts on the hellish battlefields of Nu-Earth. The sole surviving Genetic Infantryman, his mission is to track down the traitor that betrayed him and his fellow G.I.s.

Jones added in a 2000AD press release:

For years now, I have felt a sting as Marvel and DC have poured out their entire comic roster into film.  Wonderful for their fans, but every new release I silently scream “Where’s all the 2000 AD?!”  I’m so excited to finally be able to right that wrong and bring Finley-Day and Gibbons’ Rogue Trooper, a seminal British spun war yarn, to the big screen!

The film will be a joint project between Liberty Films and Rebellion, headed by CEO and Creative Director, Jason Kingsley, who said this:

Rogue Trooper has always been one of my favourite old school thrills from 2000 AD. I’m very happy to be working closely with Duncan and Stuart on this project and look forward to seeing the results on the silver screen.

2000AD are obviously VERY excited about this development, and to celebrate, they’re offering readers, new and old, a chance to discover just what this blu-skinned warrior of the future is all about with a free Rogue Trooper primer comic. Just download it direct from this link!
