New From Titan Comics: The Adventures Of Newbury & Holmes

by Richard Bruton

Coming to a comic shop near you in September, the exciting steampunk adventures of Newbury and Hobbes in The Undying! You may have already partaken in the Victorian adventures of Sir Maurice Newbury, gentleman investigator for the Crown and his plucky assistant Miss Veronica Hobbes, in the series of books by author George Mann, but this fall Titan Comics are beginning a series of comic spectaculars for your sequential art enjoyment.

Writer George Mann has published four novels featuring these steampunk adventurers but this is his first venture into comics. He says of the comic series;

I’m delighted to be bringing Newbury & Hobbes to comics, and even more excited to be working with the excellent Dan Boultwood and the team at Titan Comics.

It’s particularly timely as this year marks the 10th anniversary of the book series and the comic series precedes the release of book 5 in the Newbury and Hobbes series, The Revenant Express.

The comic series, Newbury and Hobbes: The Undying features the return of series favourite villain, Dr. Aubrey Knox –  rogue agent and occultist – who was left for dead in the final pages of The Osiris Ritual, back in 2009. You’ll also have the opportunity to read a brand-new Newbury & Hobbes prose short story, written by George Mann, serialised in each issue of the new comic series.

Mann says of the timing of the series:

It seems particularly apt that on their 10th anniversary, Newbury and Veronica are about to embark on a brand new adventure, filled with creeping horrors, eerie mysteries, terrifying chases and the sinister return of one of the most dangerous villains they’ve ever encountered, from The Osiris Ritual, Dr. Aubrey Knox…

Series artist Dan Boultwood is no stranger to the steampunk life, and it’s something that comes out spectacularly strongly in his rich, vibrant artistic work. His previous comics work includes the 1950s sci-fi silliness of It Came, The Baker Street Irregulars (with Tony Lee), and the cephlapod capers of Squid Squad in The Phoenix Comic.

On the experience of drawing Newbury and Hobbes, Boultwood says this:

Monsters, foggy old London town, steam-powered vehicles, masked subterfuge, fine suits and ladies bustles, all the things I love to draw are in Newbury & Hobbes. This book has been a lot of fun to work on. As a fan of the novels I’ve loved being able to be a part of bringing one of their stories to visual life, and it’s a great story!

Now, sit back and enjoy the variant covers for the first issue complete with a sneak peek at Dan Boultwood’s art from the comic.
