What Do Batman And Rick And Morty Have In Common?

by Tito W. James

“The hero’s journey” is a storytelling technique used long before Joseph Campbell coined the term. Rick and Morty co-creator Dan Harmon has his own take on “the hero’s journey” and divides up his story into eight simple steps. This video essay created by StudioBinder applies Harmon’s eight steps to the plot of The Dark Knight.

I recently re-watched The Dark Knight in honor of its tenth anniversary. Even a decade later, the film is a triumph and filled with material that’s only noticed after multiple viewings. The only thing that struck me as having aged was the style of smartphone. The themes, characters, and visual direction still hit home. As for the contemporary super-heroic film landscape, Marvel has just amped up the jokes, and DC has just amped up the edge-factor. They sure don’t make superhero movies like they used to.
