Power Rangers from across time and space have gathered together for an all-out assault on Lord Drakkon and his forces. Existence itself is on the line as Drakkon’s immense power grows. In an act of desperation, Zordon turns to an unlikely ally in Rita Repulsa. Can these two sworn enemies put their differences aside to save everything?
You can practically feel Zordon’s non-existent neck hairs bristle at the very thought of asking Rita for help. She revels in this, seeing her greatest foe groveling before her. It’s very clear she cannot be trusted, but what choice does Zordon have at this point? Artist Daniele Di Nicuolo brings this sly expression to Rita. She can look aloof and careless one moment and manipulative the next. She is a villain through and through.
While Zordon’s plan deals with espionage and stealth, the Power Rangers are in the midst of war. Before we get there, we have the rallying cry. Jason gives an incredible speech to energize the troops, standing on top of the command center as the sun rises (or sets?) behind him. It is so very inspiring.
Anyone that’s ever pretended to be a Power Ranger as a kid – or even as an adult – will be moved by his words. He gets down to what the Power Rangers stand for and why they have to do everything in their power to stop Lord Drakkon in his tracks. Way to go, Kyle Higgins.
This speech ends in a powerful cry from the army of Rangers that explodes off the page. Letterer Ed Dukeshire fills this with strength as these heroes in their colorful costumes proudly shout “Power Rangers!!” It’s a perfect closure to a rousing speech.
This is immediately followed by a beautiful moment between Jason and Kimberly as he passes Tommy’s dagger on to her. While this serves a tactical purpose, it also carries so much weight as this allows Kimberly to wear Tommy’s armor into battle to stop his killer. She starts crying at the sight of it and you just might too.
Alright. Now let’s get to the battle. Di Nicuolo packs these pages with so many Rangers. This is a comic fans will be going over again and again to pick through each little detail and discover every Ranger that was involved. I’m still finding new things as I’m going through it again to write this review.
It’s not just the Rangers that are battling here. The Megazords are also out on the field, adding some heavy firepower. Di Nicuolo delivers the bulk of the battle in these multi-paneled double-page spreads. Your eyes will whip back and forth as you scan through each minute detail. It’s interesting to see how similar Rangers group together. For example, a handful of Yellow Rangers are teaming up to fight back some of Drakkon’s forces.
The energy attacks explode off the page in these bursts of yellow. Colorist Walter Baiamonte heightens the excitement of this battle tenfold with a gorgeous palette. He somehow makes the drab setting of the moon colorful and thrilling.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #30 builds and builds. The panels on the final pages alternate between the Rangers fighting it out with Drakkon’s forces and the villain himself preparing his final, devastating attack. I was reading this with white knuckles, frantically turning each page…until the last, silent moment, where we’re told the story will be concluded in Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Shattered Grid #1. That comic cannot come soon enough.
