Alec Baldwin’s next role will definitely not be a farmer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 30 Rock star will play Gotham City’s most famous millionaire Thomas Wayne in the upcoming Joker. Set outside the shared narrative universe of Aquaman and Wonder Woman 1984, the film will explore the background of the nameless ne’er-do-well destined to become the Clown Prince of Crime. Joaquin Phoenix will play the title character while actors like Frances Conroy, Zazie Beetz, Marc Maron and Robert DeNiro are also in talks to join the film in various roles.
Thomas Wayne needs little introduction. He’s the husband of Martha and one of the richest men in Gotham. His death in Crime Alley leads his son Bruce to a life of trampling crime under his boot as the Bat-Man. THR reports that the script will see Wayne re-imagined as a vain real estate mogul in the 1980s. Baldwin has some experience playing self-involved members of the 1%. He played NBC big shot Jack Donaghy in 30 Rock and makes numerous appearances on the network’s Saturday Night Live as a parody of the current president; the original vain real estate mogul caricature of that by-gone decade.
The film is expected to go into production shortly, but is not yet scheduled for release.
