While The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and Riverdale may not share the exact same fictional universe, they do share the mind of executive producer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and his love of movies. That love expresses itself on Riverdale in the episode names and Season 2’s musical episode, to say nothing of the show’s overall thriller vibe. His passion for film will also work its way into the Sabrina series, complete with an homage to The Exorcist.
“I love The Exorcist. It’s one of my favorite movies,” Aguirre-Sacasa told Entertainment Weekly. “We’re doing an homage to that.”
He also told the site, the series will see Sabrina (Kiernan Shipka) face a sort of mini-movie each week as the character confronts the challenge of being half-human and half-witch. That notion is fairly consistent with the Chilling Adventures comic book series. Written by Aguirre-Sacasa, it recast the Archie Comics magical heroine as a teen living in a moody, Hammer-inspired 1960s.
The television series also features Ross Lynch as Sabrina’s potential love interest Harvey Kinkle, with Miranda Otto and Lucy Davis as Sabrina’s aunts Zelda and Hilda, Doctor Who‘s Michelle Gomez as Sabrina’s mentor Mary Wardell, Chance Perdomo as Sabrina’s British cousin Ambrose, Tati Gabrielle as rival Prudence, Jaz Sinclair as Sabrina’s best friend Rosalind Walker and Bronson Pinchot as nefarious Baxter High principle George Hawthorne.
The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina debuts on October 26th.
