The future of Marvel Studio’s cosmic arena is a new pair of hands.
Variety reports filmmaker Chloe Zhao has been tapped to direct Marvel Studio’s adaptation of The Eternals. Based on the Marvel comic book created by Jack Kirby, the Eternals were a race of proto-humans engineered by the cosmic Celestials with the intent of installing them as the world’s first super-powered protectors. Later experiments led to the race achieving the power to control vast amounts of cosmic energy. Infighting, civil wars, colonization and a chance encounter with the Kree followed; leading to Inhumans, mutants and other major anchor points in the Marvel universe. They also constantly fight against a failed aspect of the Celestial experiment: the monstrous Deviants.
The script, by Matthew and Ryan Firpo, will reportedly center on Sersi (also created by Kirby), a fourth generation Eternal with the abilities of flight, strength, immortality and molecular manipulation who may have been the inspiration for the Marvel universe’s version of the legendary Greek god Circe. The character has strong ties to the mainline Marvel universe thanks to her Avengers membership in the 1990s.
Considering the scope of the concept, The Eternals may be fast-tracked to replace Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and introduce the more cosmic elements said to be on the horizon in the studios’ Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
