It’s a Turkey Day miracle.
Mystery Science Theater 3000 will debut its twelfth season on Thursday, November 22nd according to show creator Joel Hodgson. In a letter to backers of the original “Bring Back Mystery Science Theater 3000” Kickstarter campaign, he wrote, “This Thanksgiving, Netflix will serve up six brand-new episodes of Mystery Science Theater. That means you can binge-eat turkey and binge-view movie cheese at the same time… and that we’ll have a new season of MST3K, just in time for our 30th Anniversary!”
The first episode of the series debut on Thanksgiving in 1988 on Twin Cities TV station KTMA. At the time, the riffs were improvised as Hodgson and puppet performers Trace Beaulieu and J. Elvis Weinstein watched the film live. Though the jokey takes on cheesy movies were yet to come, the rest of concept — a man stranded in space forced to watch bad movies with the company of two robot palls — debuted that night. Over the next few months, riffing on the movies became a major focus of the show and a legend was born.
“I think the movies are even worse than last season, but I know the show is better,” Hodgson told the AV Club in a recent interview. The movie selections have not yet been announced, but expect that news at any moment. Hopefully, Argoman, the Fantastic Superman from the 2017 live tour will end up in the rotation.
In addition to Season 12, MST3K will be celebrating its 30th anniversary with a live tour featuring both Hodgson and new host Jonah Ray. The pair will riff on a Canadian horror flick called The Brain and a wonderful sword-and-sandal flick called Deathstalker II in selected cities.
But really, the key thing here is that the show will be back soon and there’s no better day for it to debut.
