In the original Rocky movie series, it almost became a joke when either Mickey (Burgess Meredith) or Adrian (Talia Shire) told Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) he couldn’t win the fight. But in this new trailer for Creed II, it’s finally Rocky’s turn to tell someone they can’t win as Adonis (Michael B. Jordan) accepts a bout against Victor Drago (Florian “Big Nasty” Munteanu), son of the man who killed Donny’s father and nearly broke Rocky. In fact, Rocky even tells the younger boxer that Ivan Drago (Dolph Lundgren) “broke things in me that ain’t ever been fixed.” Which suggests Stallone is finally admitting parts of Rocky V actually took place.
But Donny has his own reasons to fight Drago the younger. Take a look at the trailer and see if you agree.
As I’ve said before, I’m fascinated to see how this series carries on without Ryan Coogler at the helm. He made Creed such a meaningful extension of the Rocky series — and a great film in its own right — that it seems Stallone carrying on without him is foolhardy. The fact the sequel is so steeped in Rocky lore suggests the focus will swing back to Rocky before too long. Or maybe it will all work out. Either way, Creed II is one of the few non-genre films we’ll be covering with great interest this fall.
Creed II opens on November 21st.
