The road back to civilization has been a long one for The Walking Dead, but as this new preview for the upcoming ninth season reveals, Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) believes his band of survivors are nearing some semblance of life before the outbreak. Of course, that’s the exact sort of confidence which often leads to downfalls on this program.
And that downfall may happen to Rick himself as Andrew Lincoln prepares to exit the program. Not that anyone on the production staff is willing to discuss the matter in any concrete way. Well, other than to say the show will be different not just because of Lincoln’s absence, but because Rick has literally left the stage. As executive producer and showrunner Angela Kang put it during a roundtable interview yesterday morning, the character’s departure changes the shape of stories because other leading characters like Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) are “not Rick.” The other character’s reactions to situations will be materially different going forward.
But in the meantime, enjoy Rick’s dream of peace. Which will no doubt begin to shatter when the series returns on October 7th.
