NYCC 2018: The New Mainstream In Comic Art Exhibits At The Art On A Gallery

by Hannah Means Shannon

You shouldn’t need that much of a reason to get a bunch of work by contemporary comic artists together in New York City ahead of New York Comic Con, and the “Comix Group Art Show” was curated by cartoonist Dean Haspiel and opened at the Art on A Gallery tonight. It featured the work of 8 different artists working in a variety of styles, ranging from superhero-fueled fare to autobio work.

The exhibition was eclectic and stood as a salient reminder of just how far the comics medium can spread while still remaining a single art form, and one that continues to speak to readers and viewers across subject matter and style. The exhibition runs until November 8th.

The following artists took part in the show alongside Dean Haspiel:

CHRISTA CASSANO

MARGUERITE DABAIE

SIMON FRASER

FRED HARPER

N. STEVEN HARRIS

JOAN REILLY

FRANK REYNOSO

CYNTHIA VON BUHLER

Here’s our substantial photogallery from the crowded show, where a number of comic creators were also in attendance, enjoying the opening and the art:
